Opposition Criticizes Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Over Bandra Stampede

Following a stampede at Mumbai's Bandra Terminus that injured at least nine people, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw faced significant backlash from opposition parties. The incident, which occurred during a rush for a Gorakhpur-bound train, left two individuals in critical condition, sparking outrage regarding railway safety and management.

Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena criticized Vaishnaw, asserting that he is preoccupied with the bullet train project while neglecting the pressing needs of passengers in Mumbai. Senior leader Aaditya Thackeray expressed doubts about the minister’s capability to ensure railway safety, stating, "It’s a shame that our country is led by such incapable ministers."

Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena echoed these sentiments, highlighting that despite Mumbai generating significant revenue for the Union government, it receives inadequate facilities for passengers. He remarked, "The railway minister is too focused on the bullet train project while people suffer due to poor infrastructure."

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Sharad Pawar, also criticized Vaishnaw. Party leader Clyde Crasto stated, "The stampede at Bandra Terminus is alarming and reflects the failures of the Railways Ministry. Insufficient train availability during the festive season and local administration shortcomings contributed to this tragedy."

The term "reel minister" was used by opposition leaders to mock Vaishnaw, suggesting that he is more interested in creating a public image than addressing the real issues plaguing the railways.

In response to the criticisms, Vaishnaw defended his performance in the Lok Sabha, asserting, "We're not just individuals who create reels; we're dedicated people who work hard." With Maharashtra state elections approaching, the BJP has entrusted Vaishnaw, a former bureaucrat, to lead their campaign efforts.
