Sharad Pawar's Grandnephew Explains Why Family Stood by 'Pawar Sahab' Following NCP Split

The political landscape of Baramati is poised for another high-profile "Pawar vs. Pawar" contest. Following the split within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) earlier this year, Yugendra Pawar, the grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, is set to make his political debut in the Maharashtra Assembly elections on November 20. He will stand against his uncle Ajit Pawar, who has represented this constituency for seven terms.

Reflecting on his decision to contest against his uncle, Yugendra shared, "It’s unfortunate this divide had to enter our family. We have always stood united, with guidance from Sharad Pawar Sahab, our family patriarch and the party’s founder. The split, witnessed by all of India, ultimately saw the Election Commission allocate the party symbol to Ajit Pawar’s faction."

The anticipated clash follows Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar's daughter, defeating Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year. Despite Ajit Pawar's departure in June 2023, Yugendra affirms the family's loyalty to Sharad Pawar. "Our family chose to remain with Pawar Sahab, recognizing his contribution not only to Baramati but to communities around the region," he noted.

Yugendra acknowledged the complexities of his candidacy: "It won’t be an easy contest, but the people of Baramati have shown their support for Pawar Sahab and will likely do so in the upcoming elections." Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, he added, "I am honored to have been entrusted with this responsibility by Pawar Sahab, Jayant Patil, and Supriya Tai Sule."

The NCP, under Sharad Pawar’s leadership, has fielded 45 candidates in Maharashtra, including 12 loyal sitting MLAs. As a candidate, Yugendra emphasized key issues that Baramati and Maharashtra face, such as rising crime, longstanding local leadership issues, unemployment, and the pressing problem of water scarcity. He highlighted that while Sharad Pawar initiated water projects decades ago, newer schemes have yet to emerge to address the drought-prone area’s needs.

Yugendra also expressed his views on reservation, aligning with the party’s stance for supporting underprivileged sections. He commended Supriya Sule’s advocacy for continued reservation in Parliament, reflecting the importance of the issue to Baramati’s residents.

As he campaigns, Yugendra is keen on personally connecting with voters across Baramati, from large towns to the smallest villages. Guided by Sharad Pawar’s mentorship, he believes that understanding local issues firsthand is essential, saying, "I prefer to be on the ground, learning directly from the people. For them, I strive to be present, available, and committed to addressing the pressing issues facing Baramati."
